Sea Some Trash? Pick It Up!
Why should we keep our shorelines trash free? Simple.
The ocean is home to millions of organisms that depend on a clean sea to survive. However, ocean organisms aren’t the only ones who depend on the ocean – we do too! The ocean creates oxygen, plays a key role in the water cycle, generates jobs, and puts food on our plate.
Unfortunately, our oceans are being trashed- literally.
More than 1.4 billion pounds of trash enters our oceans each year, and much of that trash, 8 million tons to be exact, consists of plastic. With all of that debris in the sea, the ocean environment and overall health of our planet is threatened.
Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help!
• Dispose of your trash properly
• Use trash cans with a lid
• Reduce your use of plastics
• Raise ocean conservation awareness
• Participate in a local beach clean-up
Join LMC’s Blue Friends Society for their monthly beach clean-up on Saturday, July 18. We will meet at the back gate of Loggerhead Marinelife Center and clean the beach for one hour. Afterwards, we will enjoy a complimentary breakfast, courtesy of Whole Foods Market (Palm Beach Gardens). Please bring your own bucket if you can. You can RSVP to bluefriends@marinelife.org. See you then!
