Over 10,000 people attended Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s 14th Annual TurtleFest: Together We Can for a day to celebrate the ocean at Palm Beach County’s largest seaside conservation festival.
The theme, “Together We Can,” highlighted how everyone can make a difference for the ocean. As such, TurtleFest featured only compostable cutlery and plates, reusable water bottles and stainless steel beverage cups. Because of these changes, LMC reduced the use of thousands of single-use plastic cups, bottles, utensils and plastic bags.
For the first time, TurtleFest hosted morning beach cleanups, removing debris from local beaches that was later used to create a beautiful mosaic. Also new to the festival was the Seek Zero Conservation Pavilion & Social Media Lounge. In the space, guests relaxed, joined the #TogetherWeCan conversation and learned about various conservation efforts being implemented by LMC and local partners.
“We wanted to highlight how everyone can make a difference through simple actions, whether carrying a reusable water bottle, choosing a meatless meal or cleaning the beach,” said Tommy Cutt, LMC’s chief conservation officer. “Our hope through TurtleFest is to raise awareness on how fun and rewarding conservation can be.”
Guests also enjoyed yoga, kids’ crafts and activities, food, craft beverages provided by Lagunitas and Naked Turtle Rum and live entertainment from Jahfé, Fireside Prophets, Del Pelson, The People Upstairs, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and the Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter.
TurtleFest featured other ocean-friendly opportunities as well, including a bike valet to reduce CO2 emissions and crafts from recycled materials. LMC staff and volunteers wore t-shirts made from recycled plastic water bottles and recycled cotton, which saved over 2,400 plastic bottles from landfills.
