What’s New in Rehab?
Through the life-saving efforts of several organizations, the hospital received 20 Kemp’s ridleys from New England on the night before Thanksgiving. Every winter, due to freezing temperatures, hundreds of sea turtles in the northeast become cold stunned, and this is already the second busiest season for cold stunning in Cape Cod on record. Before they can make their trip south towards warmer waters near Florida, many sea turtles become too cold to function in the waters off of New England. Sea turtles are ectothermic, meaning that their body temperature is dependent on the ambient temperature, and they do best at temperatures between 70˚ to 80˚ F. The freezing temperatures put these turtles into a state where their bodies were unable to function normally, and they were unable to swim. These turtles often wash ashore where members of the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Mass. Audubon Society are monitoring, ready to bring any turtle found to be triaged and slowly warmed up at the New England Aquarium. Once the turtles have been stabilized, due to the often overwhelming numbers of them, they are transported to other facilities where they will undergo further treatment. Our 20 turtles were flown to us through the generosity of Turtles Fly Too, an organization that coordinates with general aviation pilots to donate time, aircrafts and fuel to help with sea turtle relocation efforts during large scale stranding events. The agencies overseeing the transfer of the turtles to LMC included Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. With a great team effort, all 20 of the turtles safely made the trip south and are now being treated and cared for by the LMC hospital staff.
The 20 patients are in varying states of health. Several are being treated for pneumonia via nebulization treatments, and all are receiving antibiotics due to systemic infections. The turtles are juvenile Kemp’s Ridleys, a critically endangered species of sea turtles. You may notice lettering on their carapaces, and that is to help staff quickly identify who is who. Hospital staff closely monitor the general health of each turtle by looking at bloodwork and radiographs frequently. Fortunately, all 20 patients are slowly improving in health. The turtles, once healthy, will be released in Florida.

Project SHIELD Takes DEMA 2018
November 14-17, Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s Conservation Department traveled far from Florida’s sunny shores to Las Vegas, NV, to participate in the 2018 Dive Equipment Manufacturers Association (DEMA) show. The Conservation Team attended the DEMA show to promote the upcoming Responsible Diver program, a component of Project SHIELD. This program offers suggestions to dive operators for sea turtle safe and ocean-friendly dive practices. After 4 days in the Nevada desert, the team left having established both local and international contacts interested in collaborating with Project SHIELD on conservation initiatives in their areas.
November Cleanup Results
Every month, following each Blue Friend’s Society, underwater, and private beach cleanup, Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s Conservation Department sorts and records each piece of debris removed from the beach.
In November, five beach cleanups were evaluated, with 21,702 pieces of trash removed from the beach. Data shows that over 98% of all debris collected this month was made of plastic.
Strange items found during this month’s cleanups include; a toilet seat, a metal trash can, a pacifier, and a metal tire.
Research Update
As this year comes to an end, our research team is busy working on year end reports, analyzing data and preparing manuscripts. Below are a few highlights from the 2018 nesting season:
Encountered 59 leatherbacks! 80% of the observed leatherbacks were previously tagged and twelve new leatherbacks were tagged this season.
July 11th was the busiest night of the season with almost 700 new sea turtle crawls (nests & false crawls).
Encountered 165 loggerheads! Five of these turtles were observed nesting multiple times on our beaches.
We counted almost 100,000 eggshells! Our morning research team inventoried over 1,000 sea turtle nests this year!
Encountered 14 green turtles! One of these turtles was originally tagged in 2014, the others were first encountered this season.
Rescued turtles wedged in rocks! Five loggerheads were found wedged between natural rocks along the shoreline. All turtles were in good health once they were un-wedged.
Research Study
Breeding sex ratio and population size of loggerhead turtles from Southwestern Florida. For marine turtles, high incubation temperatures can skew sex ratios towards females. There are concerns that temperature increases may result in highly female-biased offspring sex ratios, which would drive a future sex ratio skew. Studying the sex ratios of adults in the ocean is logistically very difficult because individuals are widely distributed and males are inaccessible because they remain in the ocean. He has received consistent high praise for his ability to cater tours to different audiences and his high level of knowledge and enthusiasm.Thank you for your hard work and dedication to LMC, Hal! We are so lucky to have you on our team.
Mascot Corner: Thank You For Caring!
Fletch here, the lovable and huggable Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) mascot. My sea turtle patient friends, current and past, are very thankful for the medical care they receive at Loggerhead Marinelife Center. LMC provides comfortable hospital tanks, excellent room service for our daily meal, state of the art diagnostic technology, a veterinary pharmacy and a surgical suite for our care. A state of the art facility and equipment does not provide quality medical care, they are only an enabler. For quality care, you need four human components: a special doctor, great hospital staff, dedicated volunteers, and donors. At Loggerhead Marinelife Center, we have the “BEST” turtle doctor in the world, Dr. Charles Manire. He is a special doctor, caring, compassionate, and dedicated to returning all of my friends, his patients, to their true home, the ocean. To the hospital staff your countless hours of providing quality care: x-rays, meds, blood work, and tank side care is greatly appreciated even though we try to bite you sometimes. As Tony the Tiger would say “You’re GGGGRRREEEEEEAT!!!” To those dedicated volunteers that keep our tanks clean, feed us, and help the hospital staff treat us, you are “Number 1,” in our book. To the Donors, who without your support, none of this would be possible, we say “Thank You.” Without your support, many of us would not be swimming freely today in the ocean we call HOME.
So, what can you do to help in 2019? YOU CAN……
- Volunteer at Loggerhead Marinelife Center
- Participate in beach cleanups
- Adopt a sea turtle, for that special someone
- Celebrate your child’s birthday at LMC
- Become a member of the “Blue Friends Society”

- Support Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s mission of rehabilitation, education, research and conservation, by giving your time, talents or treasures (material or monetary).
- Pave the way to healthy oceans, purchase a personalized brick paver for the campus expansion sea turtle hospital walkways
So, at this time in the holiday season, my sea turtle friends and I say, “Thank you for everything you do and will do. We wish all of you a very safe and joyous holiday season, and a prosperous new year.”

LMC’s Responsible Gift Giving Test
Are you remembering to keep the environment on the “nice list” this holiday season?
Did you know?
- Household waste in the U.S. increases by 25% between Thanksgiving and Christmas
- The 2.65 billion cards sold each year could fill a football field 10 stories high
- The EPA estimates that the U.S. has produced 11.9 million tons of plastic packaging and over 90% of this went to a landfill after one use
- Half of the paper purchased in the U.S. is used to wrap and decorate gifts
Before considering your next gift purchase, take LMC’s Responsible Gift Giving Self-Test and ask yourself the following questions:
- Is it needed? Sometimes we get carried away during the holidays in the rush of the season and over-purchase, sometimes spending unnecessary money and creating unnecessary waste.
- Is it waste free? Some products are more sustainable than others, so examine your potential buy.
- Can it be reused? Single-use products provide temporary convenience but, in most cases, overfill our landfills and are not biodegradable.
Can it be recycled? If you must opt for a single-use product, check to ensure it won’t stay on earth longer than the next 300 holiday seasons
Shop Where it Counts
From now until Dec. 24 we will be offering $5 shipping on all orders along with the free small reusable bag!
The deadline to order and receive in time for Christmas is Dec. 16!

Company: Tropii Co.
Location of Business: Based in Jupiter, FL

What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?
Trent – When I was 16, I was hired to work at a large estate. The work was tough, but rewarding, and really taught me the value of a dollar. It also instilled in me a great work ethic and the drive to become independent.
Teddy – I was first employed as a cashier at McDonalds when I was 16. This work taught me to be humble and not think too highly of myself. While working there, I met some amazing people working very hard to make a living for their family. This taught me to celebrate and honor those who work hard for their families.
How was your current business founded?
Our business was actually founded by a good friend of ours who now does missionary work for his church. We took his idea and concept and threw our own ideas and designs into the mix to fill the demand for a newer and more hip product, and thus Tropii Co. was born!
Where do you get your ideas? What is your inspiration?
Our ideas and inspirations come from the things our Florida home is known for, the beautiful ocean, beaches and landscapes, the wildlife that is found around every corner, and the people! We love to throw our ideas out on our social media pages and see what sort of feedback and reactions we get before we release a product or even submit our designs. Being a smaller company allows us to get the buyers’ input on what they like. It’s a huge plus and a great feeling knowing that we get to involve our customers in our designs as well as the things that surround us. A cool example is our Loggerhead design! We had an artist hand draw and paint that design, and once she was finished, we tested the waters with our customers’ input, and they loved it! We were inspired by the wildlife in this area and the turtles at Loggerhead Marinelife Center!
Tell us about your product and what separates it from similar products.
Our Tropii hats are designed right here in the heart of Jupiter, FL. As many know, there’s a huge variety of straw sun hats on the market but with our product, you can be sure it will outlast the competition. Our hats are made with quality straw and come with unique SPF designs under the brim, making sure that every customer is looking stylish while keeping cool under the sun! A Tropii hat is a must accessory for any outdoor event and looks good whether you’re lying on the beach or reeling in a monster!
What do you love about your work?
We absolutely love delivering a product that we know people will love! It’s amazing when one of us walks down the beach or is at a local event, and we see one of our hats on a person. It instills a sense of pride in us and lets us know that the hard work is paying off and people really do love our product! Nothing is better than getting out and talking to the public about what we have to offer. If anything, we are just happy to be out in public building relationships and spreading the word!
What’s the best advice you’ve heard when it comes to chasing your dream?
Trent – My grandpa has always inspired to me to chase my dreams. He told me when I was young that if I wanted something bad enough, the only person standing in my way was me. He also told me to help out all those who need it along the way because you never know when you may be the one in need. It’s true, every word of it. My advice would be the same: Create opportunity for yourself. Make things happen because if you don’t, someone else will.
Teddy – I cannot recall the source, however, the best advice I have ever heard is this: Whatever your goals are, the sky is NOT the limit. There is no limit. Dream so big you will be chasing it your whole life. Even when you hit big landmarks in your life, you will still have a bigger goal ahead of you at all times.
