February 28 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am
In honor of Gopher Tortoise Day on April 10th, LMC will be leading a hike through Loggerhead Park to explore vital gopher tortoise habitat, learn about the burrows of the tortoises, and maybe see a gopher tortoise on the move! Gopher tortoises are a keystone species, meaning they have a large impact on the ecosystem they live in and are vital to the health of the ecosystem and the species within it. Sadly, gopher tortoise populations are declining due to habitat loss, disease, and mortality due to road crossings. Loggerhead Marinelife Center is tagging and sampling gopher tortoises within Loggerhead Park to determine baseline measures of health and disease prevalence. On your hike, you may even see a tortoise that we have tagged!
In partnership with Palm Beach County ERM Natural Area division, we are now offering our Hammock Hike program for free.
