America is a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle patient that was found at FPL’s St. Lucie site. The patient’s bloodwork on arrival indicated anemia and hypoglycemia. Radiographs also revealed an intestinal impaction with a large amount of crab shells. America was underweight and in poor health overall due to chronic debilitation. The turtle was put into freshwater to remove the barnacles, leeches, and other epibiota that covered its body. America received fluids and antibiotics, and our hospital staff closely monitored the turtle with routine bloodwork. The turtle is now deemed healthy for release!
