Pollution Prevention

In 2018, Loggerhead Marinelife Center hosted over 81 cleanups with volunteers removing over 3,000 pounds of debris!

After every beach and underwater cleanup, the Conservation Department sorts and documents every piece of debris. Sorting this trash allows us to identify major types and sources of pollution. We use this information to develop targeted outreach and education programs that will reduce the amount of pollution entering the marine environment.

In 2018, LMC’s Conservation Department constructed the first ever Marine Debris Sorting Station, a gift from Bank of America. The Sorting Station is a visual of some of the most common items found during beach cleanups.
