Hello LMC community!

I am Ashley Crunk, Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s new Digital Marketing and Ecommerce Intern. I’m excited to be a part of the team and would love to take a moment and share just a little bit of my story and how I came to this position.

Two years ago, I started college as a Pre-Vet student at Clemson University in South Carolina (Go Tigers!). During my first few months on campus, I learned about the widespread issue of human trafficking and how it impacts life even in my own town. As scary as this realization was, I also learned that I can advocate on behalf of those who can’t, oftentimes with something as simple as the clothes I wear. December of my freshman year, I participated in the Dressember campaign to raise awareness and funds for anti-trafficking organizations.

This newfound awareness of the issues in the world and the part I could play in fighting them, among other factors, caused me to switch my major to Communication at the end of my freshman year. Since that change, I have continued to learn more about how my influence as an individual can serve as a catalyst for change. I have researched and presented projects on sustainability and ethical fashion, advocated for fair artisan labor, and sought to change my own life to fit my realigned values.

My interest in and research on sustainable fashion has been particularly interesting. While many advancements have been made in the last ten years, the fashion industry is still full of unsafe work environments, unfair wages, and inconsistent standards. As a consumer, you and I have the power to vote on the type of world we want to live in. Choosing to purchase from ethical brands, buy secondhand, or use what you have shows the fashion industry what you value. Choosing sustainability means supporting ethical work standards and decreasing your landfill contributions. I’ve had the opportunity to present my work at multiple networking and research events at Clemson, and look forward to continuing advocacy through my role at LMC.

I am so thrilled to be a part of the LMC team this fall, partly because I feel like this organization combines my love for animals and sustainability. With LMC, I have the opportunity to promote sustainable alternatives and advocate for the well-being of some of the ocean’s most gorgeous creatures.
