About Percy

Species:

Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas)

Percy is a juvenile green sea turtle that presented as a “floater” off the coast of Martin County. This young turtle appears to be floating due to neurologic abnormalities that are causing unusual behavior, such as a lack of normal swim and dive response. Many things may cause the brain to malfunction in this way, including toxins or parasitic, bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. We are currently running tests to determine how to best treat Percy.

Unfortunately Percy has succumbed to his injuries and is no longer with us. Percy was a juvenile green sea turtle who came in with life-threatening neurological issues. Dr. Barron replied, "We gave it our best shot, but he just couldn't pull through." A necropsy will be performed to better understand the cause of death.
