Solana was named by the staff of Florida Power & Light Company, a long standing partner and supporter of Loggerhead Marinelife Center. The name Solana is very fitting as FPL is the largest supplier of clean energy in the world. FPL is another community partner that is committed to ocean conservation and has dedicated their support to further LMC’s mission.

ADMISSION NOTE:

Solana is a sub-adult loggerhead that was found in the St. Lucie Power Plant intake canal. The initial bloodwork showed anemia and overall poor health due to starvation. Hospital staff administered fluids, antibiotics, iron, and vitamins. Solana was also started on once daily parenteral nutrition supplementations. The turtle was put into freshwater to remove epibiota and leeches that covered the turtle’s body. We will continue to monitor bloodwork closely as we treat Solana.

PROGRESS KEY:

This turtle is progressing well and responding to therapy as desired.

There is a minor issue that we are working to resolve.

03/01/2018 –  Solana continues to do well.

02/23/2018 –

02/14/2018 –  Solana was moved to the Big Blue tank.

02/07/2018 –  The turtle’s anemia has resolved to the point we are ready to treat for the parasites.

01/31/2018 –  Solana is off all antibiotics and is doing well. Anemia (bone marrow) is responding.

01/03/2018 –  Parenteral nutrition has been discontinued.

12/27/2017 –  Solana is slowly responding to treatment. Parenteral nutrition is being given once daily at this point.

12/20/2017 –  Solana has been continued on parenteral nutrition. The turtle is responding well to treatments.
