Tracking Haviland
About Tracking Haviland
Species:
Loggerhead
Haviland is a loggerhead turtle that was satellite tagged on the nesting beaches adjacent to LMC on April 9, 2021. Tracking data from this turtle will be used in various ongoing research projects being conducted by the Research Department at LMC. Haviland is named after Willis Carrier’s mother, Elizabeth R. Haviland. It’s believed that Willis Haviland Carrier, the inventor of modern air conditioning, inherited his inventive and mechanical skills at a young age from his mother, Elizabeth, who fixed the family clocks, sewing machines and other mechanical items around the home. Elizabeth taught Willis fractions and other mathematics and that would eventually inspire Willis to become an engineer. Carrier, headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is a leading global provider of innovative HVAC, refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies. The company is committed to supporting their neighbors in Palm Beach County and contributing to a more sustainable, protected environment. This project was also funded in part by a grant awarded from the Sea Turtle Grants Program. The Sea turtle Grants Program is funded from proceeds from the sale of the Florida Sea Turtle License Plate. Learn more at helpingseaturtles.org.
