Loggerhead Marinelife Center's Unwrap the Wave Initiative allows for students and community members to get into the "spirit" of conservation by collecting their candy wrappers from Halloween and recycling them.

World Sea Turtle Day

World Sea Turtle Day, June 16, is a day dedicated to showcase sea turtles paramountcy. These beautiful ancient creatures contribute to the well-being of the ocean and environment. Sea turtles have been on Earth for more than 100 million years, yet 6 out of the 7 species are currently endangered or threatened. Each of us can do our part to preserve these prehistoric reptile’s existence. Use our SEA acronym to engage in conservation efforts to protect Sea Turtles.

Say No to Plastic – replacing the plastic in your life with other materials will decrease marine litter. Plastic can be substituted with glass, canvas, wood, metal or biodegradable options. Next time your are on a Pinterest crafting rampage, swap out the plastic parts with an eco-friendly option. In addition, become informed on how to ban plastic bags in your area. Surfrider lists bag legislations across the United States  with current information on plastic bag bans and fees.

Eat/Buy Local – buying locally grown products helps the local economy and the environment. Purchasing goods from local farmers or farmer’s markets reduces the amount of greenhouse gases created when products are brought in. Local Harvest is a search engine used to locate farmers, famers’ markets, and restaurants that sell locally grown food. If you have a glowing green thumb grow your own grocery store in your backyard.

App That – download conservation apps to assist in global conservation efforts. Marine Debris Tracker helps increase monitoring and enforcement efforts by enabling users to report trash on coastlines and in waterways. Seafood Watch App helps consumers make better choices by providing information about the sustainability and health implications of different seafood options. Sea Turtle App provides general information about endangered sea turtles and lets users track their worldwide migration. These apps assist you in actively participating in conservation efforts no matter where your wanderlust takes you.
