Guided Sea Turtle Walks in Florida

Experience one of nature’s most magical moments with Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s guided sea turtle walks in Florida. These unique evening walks allow you to witness loggerhead sea turtles’ nesting and egg-laying process right on Juno Beach, one of the world’s most densely populated loggerhead nesting sites.

With the guidance of our knowledgeable scouts, you’ll learn about sea turtles, their nesting habits, and the conservation efforts in place to protect them. While we can’t guarantee a turtle sighting every night, being part of this experience helps support our mission to conserve ocean ecosystems and care for injured sea turtles. Join us for an unforgettable evening and connect with nature like never before.

What to Expect During the Guided Sea Turtle Walks in Florida

Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s guided sea turtle walks are a three-hour adventure, running from 9 PM to 12 AM. During this time, you’ll be part of an informative program that blends education with the chance to witness a loggerhead sea turtle’s nesting process. Here’s how the evening unfolds:

  • Educational Presentation: The evening begins with an engaging presentation at Loggerhead Marinelife Center, where you’ll learn about sea turtles, their life cycle, and their challenges. This portion of the program includes interactive, hands-on learning experiences designed to educate and inspire.
  • Beach Patrol: As you enjoy the presentation, our experienced scouts are already searching for nesting turtles on the beach. These scouts patrol our designated section of Juno Beach, looking for signs of sea turtle activity. If a turtle is spotted, they will radio in to alert the group.
  • Witnessing Nesting: If a loggerhead turtle emerges from the ocean and begins her nesting process, the group will quietly be led to the beach to observe this incredible natural event. Watching a sea turtle lay her eggs under the moonlight is a rare and moving experience that creates memories to last a lifetime.

What If We Don’t See a Sea Turtle?

While our guided sea turtle walks in Florida offer a unique opportunity to witness nesting, sea turtles are wild animals, and their nesting is unpredictable. There is no way to guarantee a sighting on any given night, as factors beyond our control influence nesting. However, the odds are favorable, given Juno Beach’s status as a major nesting site. Even if a turtle isn’t spotted, your participation directly supports Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s conservation efforts and the care of our sea turtle patients. Plus, the educational experience alone is worth the adventure!

How the Program Works

  • Season and Schedule: Guided sea turtle walks are available Tuesday through Saturday during peak nesting season, typically in June and July. Each walk is conducted under a state-issued permit, ensuring we follow strict guidelines to protect these endangered animals.
  • Registration and Arrival: Participants arrive at Loggerhead Marinelife Center at 9 PM. The program begins with an informative presentation, during which our scouts search the beach for nesting activity.
  • Turtle Viewing: The group is escorted to the beach to witness the nesting process if a nesting turtle is spotted. The program officially ends at midnight but can conclude earlier or run longer depending on when a turtle is sighted.

Important Guidelines for Participants

  • Age and Physical Requirements: All participants must be 10 years or older and capable of walking up to half a mile on the beach. Due to permit restrictions, space is limited, and tickets sell out quickly.
  • No Flashlights or Photography: Flashlights and photography are strictly prohibited throughout the program to minimize disturbance to the nesting turtles. Please respect these rules to ensure the safety of the sea turtles.
  • What to Wear: Dark clothing is preferred, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Bring bug spray and, if rain is in the forecast, a raincoat or poncho. No umbrellas, please.
  • Rain or Shine: The program runs rain or shine, except in the case of lightning, which may delay beach access. Guests are encouraged to be prepared for weather conditions.
