Unwrap The Waves

Loggerhead Marinelife Center's Unwrap the Wave Initiative allows for students and community members to get into the "spirit" of conservation by collecting their candy wrappers from Halloween and recycling them.

LMC Expands Its Candy Wrapper Recycling Program & Invites You to Fletch’s Fall Festival

LMCCandyWrapperRecyclingStationDid you know wrappers are among the top 10 items found each year in the International Coastal Clean-up? With Halloween less than two weeks away, Loggerhead Marinelife Center is continuing to promote environmentally friendly activities like Fletch’s Fall Festival this Saturday, Oct. 20, and the yearly Candy Wrapper Recycling Program.

This year, the Center is expanding the Candy Wrapper Recycling Program by placing a candy wrapper recycling station at specific drop-off centers, including on LMC’s campus as well as at Manatee Lagoon. Palm Beach Zoo will also have a wrapper recycling station at its annual Boo at the Zoo event on Oct. 19-21 and Oct. 26-28.

Those who wish to minimize waste this Halloween should collect their empty candy wrappers and bring them to Loggerhead Marinelife Center or Manatee Lagoon before Nov. 5. There’s also a great opportunity to drop off your empty candy wrappers at Fletch’s Fall Festival this Saturday at LMC.

“Don’t forget to snap a selfie and use #PlasticFreeWithLMC on your favorite social media outlet as you recycle your wrappers,” said Hannah Campbell, associate director of education at Loggerhead Marinelife Center.

This year, students will also have an opportunity to bring their empty candy wrappers to their school if it is one of the 26 schools also participating in the Candy Wrapper Recycling initiative.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center representatives will pick up the collected wrappers at each drop-off location and ship them to TerraCycle. Collected candy wrappers will be fully recycled and used to make school supplies, such as pencil cases and craft supplies.

For more information about LMC’s Candy Wrapper Recycling Program, contact Hannah Campbell at 561-627-8280, ext. 105, or email [email protected].
