An Adventure-Filled Week for the JMB Campers at LMC Summer Camp
Hello camp families! As we wave goodbye to Ocean Adventures week, we are so happy to report that hosting your children and helping them learn was an absolute pleasure for all of us at Loggerhead Marinelife Center. This week was all about exploring the real florida by taking a deep look at our rich coastal ecosystems and learning about all the marine animals that share our home with us. The campers had the opportunity to adventure through local parks around our Juno Beach campus, head over to the beach for some fun filled data collection, and learn how to become safe anglers on the Juno Beach Pier. Your junior marine biologists were excited to leap into learning how to responsibly enjoy the outdoors through field trips, classroom seminars, and hands-on activities that let them explore the natural beauty around them.
With Loggerhead’s campus situated right next to the beach, your campers made almost daily trips down to the shoreline to learn about the wealth of biodiversity that exists all around them. Juno Beach, which is one of the most active sea turtle nesting sites in the world, is the perfect natural laboratory for new scientists to experience. Here, the campers splashed around the waves as they got to learn, and saw that the world of science isn’t locked inside a cold room somewhere, but it exists everywhere. They led and partook in extensive beach clean ups, as well as collecting seaweed and shell samples to study in our junior research lab. They were able to see right in front of them the effect of human created waste, and the importance of taking a stand to remove it, all while having a fun time in the sand and sea.
Your campers also eagerly attended several scientific seminars that gave them some necessary background on what they were dealing with when they went out. They gathered up the tools they needed to fully understand and positively experience the natural world once they stepped out into it.
Outside of our campus, the campers also took a field trip down to Blowing Rocks Preserve, a nature conservancy in Jupiter, where they went snorkeling and kayaking through the water. They saw nature living along the trails, as well as in the water, and got the opportunity to learn about a diverse natural wildlife and how they’ve adapted.
To channel their imaginations, the campers also made creative art pieces that reflected everything they learned, including a hand-made book that chronicled all their great adventures from this week.
