Unwrap The Waves

Loggerhead Marinelife Center's Unwrap the Wave Initiative allows for students and community members to get into the "spirit" of conservation by collecting their candy wrappers from Halloween and recycling them.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center Announces First-Ever Unwrap The Waves High School Winner

Juno Beach, FL – Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) is delighted to announce its  first-ever high school winner for Unwrap the Waves – John I. Leonard High School. Students from the school will receive the unique honor of naming one of LMC’s sea turtle patients.

To encourage students to think sustainably this season, the Center added a competition between 35 participating schools to their eighth Unwrap the Waves program. LMC selected the winning school based on the number of students involved, leadership and parental involvement, community efforts, creative content, and the number of candy wrappers collected. Nearly 600 students at John I. Leonard High School participated in Unwrap the Waves and collected 9,701 wrappers. Students also attended fall events at other schools and events held by local groups to show support, to educate, and to engage the community in sustainable practices.

“We are blown away by the incredible work from our participating schools,” said Hannah Campbell, vice president of LMC’s education division. “Our students showed outstanding leadership efforts by creating lasting, eco-friendly partnerships throughout the community.”

LMC ended their Unwrap the Waves conservation program with a total of 403,006 candy wrappers collected and recycled. Unwrap the Waves is a conservation program for Title I schools and community members in Palm Beach and Martin counties to collect and recycle candy wrappers. This year, 84,663 students and community members participated. Title 1 school students made up more than 20,000 of the total participants.

LMC’s Unwrap the Waves initiative not only ensures students and community members have access to recycling, but also raises awareness around the large-scale, single-use waste produced on Halloween.

Six community partners participated in this year’s program, including Manatee Lagoon; COX Science Center and Aquarium; Frost Science − Museum Volunteers for the Environment; Downtown Palm Beach Gardens; City of West Palm Beach − Keep West Palm Beach Beautiful; and the City of Boca Raton.

Congratulations to our students and partners on a successful season of sustainability!
