Unwrap The Waves

Loggerhead Marinelife Center's Unwrap the Wave Initiative allows for students and community members to get into the "spirit" of conservation by collecting their candy wrappers from Halloween and recycling them.

Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa to host sea turtle nesting season kick-off with the Sea Turtle Hospital at Loggerhead Marinelife Center

Eau-tis, a current patient at LMC, was named in honor of the Center’s partnership with Eau Palm Beach.

The Forbes Five-Star Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa in partnership with the Sea Turtle Hospital at Loggerhead Marinelife Center will host the February Blue Friends Cocktail Social, a celebratory start to Palm Beach County’s sea turtle nesting season, on Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Eau’s Breeze Ocean Kitchen.

At the seaside event, guests will enjoy cocktails, delicious bites, fabulous raffles, networking and more. The social is $25 for nonmembers and complimentary for Blue Friends Society members.

Sea turtle nesting season officially runs March 1-Oct. 31 in the Palm Beaches. That means it’s time to pay special attention to our beautiful beaches – enjoyed by thousands of guests from around the globe and thousands of endangered nesting sea turtles.

During nesting season, Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s research biologists monitor a 9.5-mile stretch of beach along Juno, Jupiter and Jupiter Island – one of the most densely nested stretches in the world. In 2017, LMC’s team documented a record-breaking 19,000+ nests on that stretch.

In honor of the season, there are special steps everyone can take to ensure the safety of nesting females and hatchlings:

  • Turn off lights and draw blinds to help nesting females and hatchlings find their way
  • Fill in holes and knock down sandcastles to clear a path for sea turtles
  • Avoid walking through dunes and the surrounding vegetation
  • Put away chairs, tables or other items on the beach
  • Let hatchlings emerge from the nest on their own
  • Keep your distance from nesting sea turtles
  • Don’t litter or release balloons and lanterns

LMC President & CEO Jack E. Lighton will be available for nesting season interviews at Eau Palm Beach the day of the social. Interested members of the media may contact Hannah Deadman, LMC’s public relations & communications coordinator, to arrange an interview at [email protected] or (561) 627-8280 ext. 124.
