Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) (CM24-57)

Croissant is a juvenile green transferred from Brevard Zoo and found on Cape Canaveral. Croissant is very thin and emaciated. Current treatment is freshwater bath, fluids, TPN and antibiotics.

Croissant sounded raspy on last exam and radiographs showed no improvement. Another transtracheal wash was performed to determine if treatment plan needs to be adjusted. Croissant is still very skinny and has develop pressure sores on the plastron. Current treatment is antibiotics and wound care.

Dr. Barron performed a transtracheal wash. A transtracheal wash is a diagnostic tool to determine what type of organism is causing pneumonia. Sterile water is passed through the endotracheal tube to the lungs. The sterile water is drained from the lungs and sent to the lab. Current treatment is fluids, TPN and antibiotics.
