Job Summary
The Education Department is currently accepting high school level interns to assist with the facilitation of current and future education programming offered at LMC. Students interested in this program will be working under LMC Education Staff and assisting in various lessons, including, but not limited to:
Core Responsibilities
• Facilitating currently offered public programs as needed
• Daily facilitation of education programming including STEM Cart demonstrations and amphitheater
science talks for campus guests
• Assisting in the design of new, innovative and mission-centric programming
• Monitoring and communicating inventory needs for more than 20 educational programs
• Maintaining relationships with LMC volunteers and staff members involved with programming
• Educating guests on current sea turtle patients, the Sea Turtle Hospital at LMC, Florida’s coastal ecosystems, and providing conservation tips
• Completion of a group intern project to be determined within the first three weeks of hire. Education staff will assist the intern group in finding a topic of group interest. The project objectives include the following:
o Learn how to successfully design and structure one complete educational program
o Share their lesson on campus with visiting guests or students
o Present their findings and data collection to LMC staff and volunteers at the end of their internship
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
- Comfortable speaking with the general public, including various age ranges and ethnic backgrounds
- Self-motivated and willing to learn
- Desire to spread awareness of marine science education through interactive and educational programming
- Willing to work outdoors in Florida’s heat, rain, and wind as needed
o Available 1 weekend day per week throughout 4 month semester (flexible with semester schedule)
o Applications due no later than January 1 (spring), April 1 (summer), August 1 (Fall)
All interns must be currently enrolled high school students with a high interest in a marine science (i.e. marine science, biology, environmental science, education). All interns must also possess a valid driver’s license or secure reliable transportation to and from LMC. All internship hours are eligible for volunteer service hours with Palm Beach County schools.
