Being selected as a DaRin Butz Research Fellow at Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) is both a prestigious and impactful opportunity designed to advance women in STEM while contributing directly to sea turtle conservation research. Supported by a generous multi-year commitment from the DaRin Butz Foundation, the fellowship funds three undergraduate or recently graduated female researchers annually, empowering the next generation of female scientists through immersive, hands-on fieldwork.
Fellows play a critical role in LMC’s Morning Nest Monitoring Program, which spans 9.5 miles of highly active sea turtle nesting beach. They participate in daily nesting surveys, nest evaluations, and escarpment monitoring—gathering essential data that informs conservation strategies for sea turtles, which serve as vital indicators of ocean ecosystem health. In addition to field work, fellows support staff with biological sample inventory, equipment and field supply inventory, and help ensure that field vehicles and all equipment are well-maintained and field-ready. These data-driven insights help address key knowledge gaps in the face of climate change and habitat degradation.
What sets this fellowship apart is not only its rigorous scientific foundation but its emphasis on equity and inclusion. Since 2019, LMC’s research team has been led by a predominantly female staff, with 86% representation. The DaRin Butz Fellowship continues this tradition, offering emerging female scientists robust mentorship, field training, and career development within a supportive and diverse environment. Fellows are publicly recognized as DaRin Butz Research Fellows, underscoring the importance of their contributions and elevating their professional profiles in the conservation community.
Loggerhead Marinelife Center is grateful to the DaRin Butz Foundation for its visionary support and unwavering commitment to empowering women in science. Their investment not only sustains critical conservation research but also creates meaningful opportunities for young women to lead, learn, and thrive in the field.
