Job Summary
The Education Department is currently accepting college level interns to assist with the development, implementation, and facilitation of current and future education programming offered on our NEW expanded campus at LMC. This is a part-time (up to 24-hours per week) volunteer internship opportunity beginning in January 2024. Students interested in this program will be working under LMC Education Staff and assisting in various projects, including, but not limited to:
Core Responsibilities
● Assisting staff in the facilitation of educational programming as needed, including, but not limited to field trips, public programs, STEM cart talks, amphitheater shows, and virtual reality experiences
● Facilitating LMC’s community outreach and engagement programming off campus
● Serving as an Exhibit Interpreter to engage campus visitors with our coastal habitats and ecosystems
● Training and supervision of LMC education volunteers to lead regularly scheduled programs
● Brainstorming and assisting in the design of new, innovative and mission-centric programming
● Monitoring and communicating inventory needs for more than 20 various educational programs
● Maintaining relationships with LMC volunteers and LMC staff members involved with programming
● Daily tasks including creating education materials and content for monthly blogs, visitor engagement, and program social media content
● Additional opportunities may include rotations through other departments at LMC such as our Conservation, Rehabilitation, and Research departments
● Other duties as assigned
Completion of an intern project to be determined within the first week of hire. Education staff will assist with the program scope, direction, and reach. The project objectives include the following:
● Learn how to successfully design and structure one complete educational program. Write age-appropriate program curricula and create a standard operating procedure and supplemental training materials. Implement the program on campus at LMC
● Interns will carry out their final program and facilitate the program to LMC staff members at the end of their internship
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
- Must be currently enrolled university students (full or part time) pursuing a degree in a related discipline (i.e. marine science, biology, environmental science, education)
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test
- Comfortable speaking with the general public and engaging with guests of all ages, backgrounds, and learning abilities
- Motivated to work with guests in an educational capacity and lead campus programming
- Detail oriented, organized, and excited to assist with various projects
- Must thrive in a highly-visible, guest-facing environment that is fast paced
- Desire to spread awareness of marine science education through interactive and engaging programming, both free and fee-based
- Willing to work outdoors in Florida’s heat, rain, and wind as needed
