Internship Summary

The Conservation Department works on developing and implementing comprehensive conservation solutions to man-made threats facing sea turtles. Every year, thousands of sea turtles travel to Palm Beach County (PBC) to lay their eggs on our beaches. During this time, sea turtles spend greater amounts of time at the surface of the water where they are at an increased risk of being accidentally hit by boats. The team is seeking an STPZ intern who will spearhead the expansion and research efforts for the STPZ in PBC. The internship will have a monthly stipend; however, housing is not included. The internship requires a minimum commitment of five months from May to September.  

Hours:  
15–25 hours a week, 2–4 days a week. Hours will vary depending on weather conditions and outreach schedule.  

Core Responsibilities

Includes, but are not limited to the following:  

  • Regularly schedule and collect STPZ boat speed data.  
  • Train and oversee fellow interns.  
  • Input STPZ data and send completed forms to Conservation Manager and partners.  
  • Gather pre- and post-implementation research (boat speed and survey data) 
  • Distribute STPZ outreach materials to partnering marinas, boating ramps, and boat rental
    locations in Palm Beach County.  
  • Regularly schedule and collect STPZ boat speed data.  
  • Train and oversee fellow interns.  
  • Input STPZ data and send completed forms to Conservation Manager and partners.  
  • Gather pre- and post-implementation research (boat speed and survey data) 
  • Distribute STPZ outreach materials to partnering marinas, boating ramps, and boat rental  locations in Palm Beach County.  
  • Facilitate and assist with STPZ and LMC outreach efforts.  
  • Assist in the expansion of the STPZ throughout PBC.  
  • Actively look for STPZ outreach opportunities.  
  • Create and contribute original STPZ content to be posted on our social media channels.  
  • Present STPZ initiatives and findings at conferences, expos, and meetings.  
  • Other tasks assigned as necessary. 

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Current undergraduate or recent graduate with biological science-related degree.  
  • Computer skills required: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point), Google apps, web, and social media savvy.  
  • Must have strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of different audiences.  
  • Proficiency in multiple languages preferred.  
  • Boating license preferred.  
  • Use of personal vehicle (mileage/gas reimbursements will be made).  
  • Valid driver’s license required.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position may involve working outdoors in Florida, often in hot and humid conditions, and at events that extend into evening and weekend hours. Must be willing and able to travel for offsite programming and possess a valid driver’s license.
