Unwrap The Waves

Loggerhead Marinelife Center's Unwrap the Wave Initiative allows for students and community members to get into the "spirit" of conservation by collecting their candy wrappers from Halloween and recycling them.

New Year, New Resolutions

Single-use plastic straws have a major impact on our planet. “Skip the straw” next time you eat out!

Yes, it’s that time of year – three weeks into January.

The time when we stop eating healthier. When we exercise less after work. When New Year’s resolutions fade away and things slowwwly start to get back to “normal.” Just like last year.

Why do we do this?

It’s because we want to be better. We want to give back. But it’s hard. It’s hard to make those changes when you push yourself too much.

I propose we make the conscious decision to reach higher; to be better – moment by moment. So how about making lifestyle choices that we get better at each and every day?

Not the choice that says “If I don’t go zero waste I won’t make a difference.” The choice that says “I’m saying no to that single-use plastic straw.” Or “I’m going to bring that reusable bag when I grocery shop.”

We can all make a difference for our planet – and it starts with simple lifestyle changes. Riding your bike to work or school, taking a reusable container and utensils for lunch or turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth all help to make a positive impact on our blue planet.

If you want to make a difference for our world but don’t know where to start, we’ve provided a quick list of ideas for you to get started. For more information on our conservation work, visit marinelife.org.

  • Participate in a beach cleanup (or create your own)
  • Carpool or walk/ride your bike to work
  • Opt for reusable coffee cups and water bottles
  • Turn off lights and unplug cords to save energy
  • Choose drought-resistant plants to save water
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle items (in that order!)
  • Choose sustainable seafood options
