Issue: Chronic Debilitation

Justice Ginsburg is a subadult loggerhead sea turtle patient that was found at FPL’s St. Lucie site. The patient’s bloodwork on arrival indicates anemia and hypoglycemia, and the turtle is underweight and in poor health overall due to chronic debilitation. Justice Ginsburg is receiving fluids and antibiotics, and will be closely monitored by hospital staff with routine bloodwork as it is being treated. This turtle had previously stranded near the Cocoa Beach Pier on March 13, 2019, and was a rehabilitation patient at the Brevard Zoo Sea Turtle Healing Center. The turtle was later released on August 1, 2019 from Cocoa Beach.

The turtle has been moved to the camera tank this month, so the public can watch its progress and movements daily. Justice Ginsburg underwent treatment for chronic debilitation in 2019 at a different facility, so we are reviewing its past medical records carefully to aid us in determining what contributed to its re-stranding. Justice Ginsburg’s prognosis remains excellent.
