Unwrap The Waves

Loggerhead Marinelife Center's Unwrap the Wave Initiative allows for students and community members to get into the "spirit" of conservation by collecting their candy wrappers from Halloween and recycling them.

About Tracking Beverly

Species:

Dermochelys coriacea (Leatherback Sea Turtle)

We had not seen Beverly nesting on our beaches locally since 2016. Based on her circumference, we estimate that Beverly weighed ~980 lbs during our encounter with her in June, indicating that she is one of our largest turtles nesting on our local beaches. She was satellite tagged in an effort to update foraging locations for leatherbacks that nest in Florida.

This project was funded in part by a grant awarded from the Sea Turtle Grants Program. The Sea turtle Grants Program is funded from proceeds from the sale of the Florida Sea Turtle License Plate. Learn more at helpingseaturtles.org.

Jupiter Beach, FL

Beverly has returned! The night crew observed Beverly in Juno Beach on May 4, 2023. Unfortunately, she false crawled. The team hopes to see her again during a successful nesting attempt so that they can replace her satellite tag to track her for another season.

Update: Beverly nested on Sunday, May 15, 2023 and the team was able to successfully apply a new tag.
