Workshop Descriptions

Bustling Biodiversity

Students will explore Coral Cove Park and all of the amazing creatures that call it home! After a lesson on the basics of biodiversity field collection techniques, students will investigate the presence of various marine plants and animals, and get to try their hand at seine netting.

Hammock Hikers

Students will learn about the hammock ecosystem, and what it means for a plant or animal to be called a ‘keystone species.’ While keeping their eyes peeled for any gopher tortoises, students will investigate the different adaptations plants in the hammock utilize in order to thrive there.

All About Plankton

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a microscopic critter living in the ocean? Now’s your chance to find out! Students will learn all about the different types of plankton, and their importance as the base of the ocean food web. After a lesson on plankton, students will venture down to the beach to conduct a plankton tow and then view them under the microscope! Research is sometimes a “dirty” job, so students should be prepared to get a little sandy or wet.

Kayak Adventure

Explore the mangrove ecosystem by kayak! Students will be led on a naturalist excursion of the mangrove ecosystem by kayaking through the habitat to learn about the importance of the mangrove ecosystem and what animals depend on this habitat for survival. Tandem kayaks for student use provided by LMC.
